Yarn weight guide

Fingering

The workhorse of modern hand-knitting. Fingering — sometimes labelled "4-ply" in the UK — is the standard weight for socks, lightweight shawls, and the great Fair Isle and Estonian colourwork traditions.

About this weight

Fingering yarns split into two main families: durable wool/nylon sock blends (Regia, Opal, Hedgehog Sock, etc.) and pure-wool yarns spun for colourwork (Jamieson's of Shetland Spindrift, Rauma 2-ply, Brooklyn Tweed Loft). For stranded colourwork, the rule of thumb is non-superwash, woollen-spun, slightly grabby — the fibres need to felt very slightly to each other to lock the floats.

Sock yarns are typically 75% wool / 25% nylon for durability. Pure-wool fingerings in non-superwash merino are the gold standard for stranded colourwork.

Swatching at this weight

For socks: 4 in × 4 in in the round on the intended needles. For shawls: a flat swatch in the lace pattern, wet-blocked.

Swatch fingering in the round if you intend to knit in the round; flat and circular gauge differ noticeably for most knitters.

Substituting yarn weights

Fingering and sport are close cousins; you can often substitute one for the other by going one needle size up or down, but the row gauge will shift. Read the full yarn weight conversion reference before swapping any yarn.
