M1R (Make 1 Right)
M1R is the mirrored partner to M1L: a right-leaning lifted increase made by knitting into the bar between stitches in the opposite direction. The two together produce symmetric paired increases on either side of a shaping line.
Recommended A printable technique cheat-sheet for your knitting bag.
Method
With the left needle, lift the horizontal bar between the next stitch and the previous stitch from back to front. Knit the lifted bar through the front loop. The new stitch leans to the right.
Pairing with M1L
In raglan, sleeve, and shawl shaping, M1R is worked on the side of the marker that needs a right-leaning increase, with M1L on the other side. Together they frame the centre line symmetrically and produce a visually clean line of paired increases.

Visual leaning
On stockinette, M1R leans visibly to the right under the increase site. The lean is usually visible only when the fabric is held flat under good light.
Common error
Reversing the direction of the lift produces a hole rather than a closed increase. The simple rule: M1L lifts front-to-back and knits through the back; M1R lifts back-to-front and knits through the front.

Tips
- Pair M1R with M1L on opposite sides of a marker for symmetric increases.
- For paired raglan increases: k to 1 st before marker, M1L, k1, sm, k1, M1R, k to next marker.
- Knit through the front loop to close the increase — knitting through the back will produce a hole.
In depth
M1R is mechanically the mirror of M1L: the same bar is lifted, but in the opposite direction, and knit through the opposite loop. This produces a stitch that leans the opposite way, completing a symmetric paired increase pattern.
