How the pattern library is sourced

Every pattern in the free pattern library (540 pages as of this rebuild) is sourced from freevintageknitting.com, a public-domain archive of vintage knitting leaflets and pattern books. The site's own text states: "these designs are no longer protected by copyright and you are free to do whatever you would like to do with them! Copy them, share them, make finished items from them and sell them." We re-verified that statement live on freevintageknitting.com before this rebuild.
Data as of 2026-07-25. Patterns were fetched directly from the site's own sitemap-listed pattern pages (1673 candidate pages found; 1456 parsed cleanly into title, category, attribution, and full instructions; the rest were skipped, not guessed, because our parser could not confidently separate the real pattern text from page furniture on an older template variant). Of the 1456 cleanly parsed patterns, 540 were selected for this site; the remainder is held in a shared archive for a sibling vintage-pattern site (chordgrove.com) so the two sites show non-overlapping pattern sets. This is a one-time archival crawl, not a live feed — there is no recurring sync claim on this page or any pattern page.
What's shown, and what isn't
Shown on every pattern page: the title, category, the full original materials-and-instructions text (verbatim, including original vintage abbreviations and measurements), and — where the source page itself states it — the name of the original pattern book, leaflet, or yarn-company publication it first appeared in, linked back to that page on freevintageknitting.com and to the exact pattern page we copied it from.
Deliberately withheld: the old catalogue showed a "Designer," "Skill level," "Yarn weight," and "Needle size" field on every pattern. None of that is reliably present in the source: these vintage leaflets credit a publisher or pattern-book series, not an individual designer, and skill level / needle size / yardage appear only as free-text inside the instructions (in whatever units and phrasing the original leaflet used), not as a consistent structured field we could tag without guessing. Rather than invent or force-fit those fields, we removed them. The full original materials and gauge information is still there — inside the pattern's own instructions text, exactly as published.
Because the source data doesn't carry it, the old /skill-levels/ section (which existed only to sort the previous fabricated patterns) has been removed. Category browsing (/categories) and the yarn-weight reference pages (/yarn-weights, which cover real stitch-dictionary entries, unaffected by this rebuild) remain.
Category mapping
freevintageknitting.com organizes patterns under its own ~65 historical category labels (e.g. "Sock Patterns," "Baby Patterns," "Womens Sweater Patterns"). We map each of those, by keyword, onto this catalogue's ten existing shelves (Hats, Scarves, Sweaters, Socks, Baby Knits, Cowls, Mittens & Gloves, Shawls & Wraps, Blankets & Throws, Home & Accessories) so the site's navigation didn't need to change. This is a grouping/formatting step on top of real records, not an invented field — the mapping keywords are listed in the build script committed alongside this rebuild. One shelf, Cowls, currently shows 0 patterns: the cowl as a named garment form doesn't appear in this vintage-era archive, and we chose an honest empty state over stretching an unrelated pattern to fill the shelf.
Corrections
If a pattern's category, attribution, or instructions look wrong, or you spot a transcription issue carried over from the source, tell us via the contact page and we'll check it against the original freevintageknitting.com page and correct or remove it.
