Elizabeth Zimmermann and Modern Knitting
Elizabeth Zimmermann (1910–1999) was the most influential English-language knitting writer of the 20th century. Her books transformed hand-knitting from a follow-the-pattern exercise into a problem-solving craft governed by a few simple percentages.

EPS (Elizabeth's Percentage System)
Zimmermann's percentage system gives the proportions for a basic seamless yoke sweater: sleeve circumference at the upper arm = 33% of body circumference; armhole depth = 25% of body circumference; etc. The system lets a knitter design any size sweater from a single body measurement.
Major books
Knitting Without Tears (1971), Knitter's Almanac (1974), Knitting Workshop (1981), and the posthumous Knitting Around (1989) are the four core Zimmermann books. All are still in print and remain the most accessible introduction to design-as-you-go knitting.

Influence
Modern top-down seamless construction, the popularity of percentage-based design, the integration of design and execution — all are direct Zimmermann legacies. Designers like Ann Budd and Cat Bordhi credit Zimmermann as a foundational influence.
Personality
Zimmermann's writing is famously witty and opinionated. Her television show Knitting Workshop (PBS, 1980s) reached an audience of millions and converted a generation of knitters from pattern-followers to designers.

In depth
Elizabeth Zimmermann transformed hand-knitting from a technical exercise into a creative one. Her books and television shows reached an audience that extended far beyond traditional knitting magazines and made design-your-own-sweater an accessible idea for the average knitter. Modern hand-knitting in English is unimaginable without her influence.
