MATERIAL:
2 balls Sock yarn 3 ply, m. c. (1 oz. ball)
1 ball Sock yarn 3 ply, 1st c. c. (1 oz. ball)
1 ball Sock yarn 3 ply, 2nd c. c. (1 oz. ball)
1 set sock needles each No. 1 and No. 2
1 card Nylon for heel and toe reinforcement

GAUGE: 7½ sts. = 1 inch

PATTERN:
1st round: m. c., K around
2nd to 8th rounds incl.: m. c., K 1, P 1 all around
9th round: 1st c. c., K around
10th to 12th rounds incl.: 1st c. c., K 1, P 1 all around
13th round: m. c., K around
14th round: m. c., K 1, P 1 all around
15th round: 2nd c. c., K around
16th to 18th rounds incl.: 2nd c. c., K 1, P 1 all around
Repeat these 18 rounds for pattern.

With m. c. and No. 1 needles cast on 68 sts. Join and work in ribbing K 1, P 1 for 3 inch. Change to No. 2 needles and pattern, and work even until sock measures 9 inch, ending with 18th round. Slip next 34 sts. to one needle for heel and divide the rem. 34 sts. on 2 needles for instep. Attach Nylon and work over heel needle only. 1st row: * slip 1, K 1, repeat from * across row. 2nd row: P across row. Repeat these 2 rows for 28 rows. Now start shaping heel (right side facing you): Slip 1, K 16, K 2 tog., K 1, turn. Slip 1, P 3, P 2 tog., P 1, turn. Slip 1, K 4, K 2 tog., K 1, turn. Slip 1, P 5, P 2 tog., P 1, turn. Continue this way always working 1 st. more on each row until 18 sts. are left on heel needle. Cut off Nylon. With another needle (1st needle), pick up and K 14 sts. on one side of heel, work in pattern across instep needle. With another needle (3rd needle), pick up and K 14 sts. on other side of heel and K half of heel sts. to same needle. Slip the rem. heel sts. to first needle, end at center of sole. Decr, for instep as follows: 1st round: On first needle K to within 3 sts., K 2 tog., K. 1, work across instep sts. in pattern. On 3rd needle K 1, slip 1, K 1 and p.s.s.o. the K St., K to end. 2nd round: Work even, keeping pat­tern on instep needle. Repeat these 2 rounds until 16 sts. are left on each heel needle, keeping the pattern on instep needle and K on each heel needle, working c. c. stripes also on heel needles. Work even until foot measures from tip of heel 8 inch, for size 10; 8½ inch, for size 10½, or 2 inch, less than desired length when finished. Discon­tinue pattern on instep needle and decr. 1 st. on each end of this needle. There are now 64 sts. in round. Break off c. c. balls and work toe decrease in m. c. only, as follows: Attach Nylon. 1st round: K around. 2nd round: On first needle K to within 3 sts., K 2 tog., K 1. On 2nd needle: K 1, slip 1, K 1, p.s.s.o. the K st., K to within 3 sts., K 2 tog., K 1. 3rd needle: K 1, slip 1, K 1, p.s.s.o. the K St., K to end. Repeat these 2 rounds until 20 sts. are left in round. Weave sts. tog.
