Knitting needles, 1 pair No. 5.

Afghan measures 42 x 64 inches

Lace strip measures 6¼ inches wide; seed stitch strip measures 1¾ inches wide.

GAUGE: Lace Stitch—13½ sts = 2 inches. Seed Stitch—5 sts = 1 inch.

LACE STRIP (Make 5) . . . Starting at narrow edge, cast on 42 sts. 1st and all uneven rows (wrong side): K 1, p 6, (k 2, p 11) twice; k 2, p 6, k 1. 2nd row: P 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.; O, k 4, (p 2, k 4, O, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o.; O, k 4) twice; p 2, k 4, O, k 2 tog, p 1. 4th row: P 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.; k 1, O, k 3, (p 2, k 3, O, k 1, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o.; k 1, O, k 3) twice; p 2, k 3, O, k 1, k 2 tog, p 1. 6th row: P 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.; k 2, O, k 2, (p 2, k 2, O, k 2, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o.; k 2, O, k 2) twice; p 2, k 2, O, k 2, k 2 tog, p 1. 8th row: P 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.; k 3, O, k 1, (p 2, k 1, O, k 3, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o.; k 3, O, k 1) twice; p 2, k 1, O, k 3, k 2 tog, p 1. 10th row: P 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.; k 4, O, (p 2, O, k 4, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o.; k 4, O) twice; p 2, O, k 4, k 2 tog, p 1. 12th, 14th, 16th and 18th rows: Repeat 8th, 6th, 4th, 2nd rows. SEED STITCH STRIP (Make 6) ... Start­ing at narrow edge, cast on 9 sts. 1st row: K 1, * p 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. Repeat last row for pattern until length is same as Lace Strip. Bind off in pattern. Block to measurements. Sew strips neatly to­gether lengthwise, alternating pat­terns.

BORDER ... With right side facing, sc closely around, making 3 sc in each corner. Join. Break off and fasten.

FRINGE ... Cut 8 strands 22 inches long for each fringe. Make a fringe evenly spaced across each narrow edge about 1 inch apart. Then follow directions for Knotted Fringe. Make another row of knots as before. Trim evenly.
