All sizes

MATERIAL:
2  balls Sock yarn, 3 ply (1 oz. ball) for short socks
3 balls Sock yarn, 3 ply (1 oz. ball) for long socks
1 set sock needles each No. 1 and No. 2
1 card Nylon for heel and toe reinforcement

GAUGE: 7 sts. = 1 inch

PATTERN:
1st round: K 9, * P 1, K 12, repeat from * across round, end K 3.
2nd round: K 8, * P 1, K 1, P 1, K 10, repeat from * across round end K 2.
3rd round: K 7, * P 1, K 3, P 1, K 8, repeat from * across round, end K 1.
4th round: K 6, * P 1, K 5, P 1, K 6, repeat from * across round, end P 1.
5th round: * P 6, K 7, repeat from * across round, end K 7.
6th, 7th, 8th rounds: Like 5th round.
9th round: * K 6, P 1, K 5, P 1, repeat from * across round, end P 1.
10th round: K 7, * P 1, K 3, P 1, K 8, repeat from * across round, end K 1.
11th round: K 8, * P 1, K 1, P 1, K 10, repeat from * across round, end K 2.
Repeat these 11 rounds for pattern.

Cast on 64 sts. with No. 1 needles, join and work in ribbing K 1, P 1, for 3½ inch. (2 inch, for short socks), incr. 1 st. at the end of last round (65 sts.) Change to No. 2 needles and pattern. Work even until sock measures 10 inch. (6 inch, for short socks), end with 4th round. Now divide the sts. as follows: for heel slip on 1 needle 33 sts. and divide rem. 32 sts. evenly on the 2 instep needles (pattern for instep must read P 6, K 7). Attach Nylon and work over heel needle only. 1st row: * slip 1, K 1, re­peat from * all across row, end K 1. 2nd row: P across. Repeat these 2 rows for 26 rows ending with a P row. Turn heel on right side: slip 1, K 17, K 2 tog., K 1, turn. Slip 1, P 4, P 2 tog., P 1, turn, slip 1, K 5, K 2 tog., K 1, turn, slip 1, P 6, P 2 tog., P 1, turn. Continue this way always work­ing 1 more st. on each row until 18 sts. are left on needle. Cut off Nylon. K across heel needle. With another needle pick up and K 13 sts. alongside of heel (1st needle). Work across all instep sts. in pattern. With another needle, pick up and K 13 sts. along other side of heel and K on to same needle 9 sts. of heel needle (3rd needle). Slip rem. 9 sts. of heel needle on to 1st needle, ending at center of sole. "Decr, for instep as follows: 1st round: K around, keep­ing instep sts. in pattern. 2nd round: on 1st needle K to within 3 sts., K 2 tog., K 1. On 2nd needle work in pat­tern. On 3rd needle K 1, slip 1, K 1 and p.s.s.o. the K st. K to end. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 64 sts. left in round (decr. 1 st. on instep needle and discontinue pattern on instep needle). Work even until sock measures from back of heel 8 inch, for size 10; 8½ inch, for size 10½; 9 inch, for size 11, or 2 inch, less than desired length when finished. Start to decrease for toe: Attach Nylon. 1st round: K around. 2nd round: K to within 3 sts. of 1st needle, K 2 tog., K 1. On 2nd needle K 1, slip 1, K 1 and p.s.s.o. the K st., K to within 3 sts., K 2 tog., K 1. On 3rd needle K 1, slip 1, K 1 and p.s.s.o. the K st. K to end. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 24 sts. left. Weave sts. tog.
