Materials:
Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 3 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size).
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5.
1 button.
Gauge: 7 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.
Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 58 sts and work in garter st (k each row) for 1 inch. Then work in pattern as follows: 1st to 4th rows incl: K 1, * k 4, p 4. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 5th to 8th rows incl: K 1, * p 4, k 4. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. These last 8 rows constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 6½ inches in all.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 42 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 3½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each row until 18 sts remain. K 1 row. Bind off loosely.
Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 35 sts and work in garter st for 1 inch. Then work as follows: 1st row: K 6, * p 4, k 4. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 4, k 1. 2nd row: K 1, * k 4, p 4. Repeat from * to within last 10 sts, k 10. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: K 6 (these 6 sts form center front band), * k 4, p 4. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 5. 6th row: K 1, * p 4, k 4. Repeat from * to within last 10 sts, p 4, k 6. 7th and 8th rows: Repeat 5th and 6th rows. These last 8 rows constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 6½ inches in all.
To Shape Armhole: Starting at underarm, bind off 4 sts. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 27 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 1½ inches form 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, change 7 more sts at center front edge to k sts (13 k sts in all). Hereafter continue as before, but keeping the 13 sts at front edge k sts and making a buttonhole 2 sts in from front edge after the next ½ inch (to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 2 sts; on next row cast on 2 sts to replace those bound off). Continue in pattern for another ½ inch. Then, starting at front edge, bind off 10 sts, k 3, p 2 tog. (a decrease), and continue in pattern across. Next row: Work in pattern, ending row with k 7. Hereafter continue in pattern for 3 rows, keeping the 7 sts at front edge in garter st and making another dec. as before on 2nd row. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 6 sts every other row twice, and 3 sts once.
Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, but omitting buttonhole and reversing shapings.
Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 34 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1½ inches, increasing 8 sts at equal distances apart on last row (42 sts). Then work in pattern as for Back until piece measures 5½ inches (10 blocks). To shape top of sleeve, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 24 sts remain. Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 14 sts remain. Bind off. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Work a row of s c all around neck edge. Sew on button to correspond with buttonhole.
