Materials:
Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 3 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
3 buttons.

Gauge: 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 71 sts and work in garter st (k each row) for 7 rows. 8th row: K 1, p across, ending row with k 1. 9th row: K across. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until piece measures 6½ inches in all, ending with a p row. Then work as follows:

1st row: K 34, p 3, k 34. 2nd row: K 1, p across, ending row with k 1. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows once. 5th row: K 28, (p 3, k 3) twice, p 3, k 28. 6th row: Repeat 2nd row. 7th row: K 28, (p 3, k 1, O, k 2 tog.) twice, p 3, k 28. 8th row: Repeat 2nd row. Piece should now measure 7½ inches.

9th row: To shape armhole, bind off 3 sts, then k 19, (p 3, k 3) 4 times, p 3, k 22 (68 sts on needle). 10th row: Bind off 3 sts (thus shaping opposite armhole), k 1, p across, ending row with k 1. 11th row: K 1, k 2 tog., k 16, (p 3, k 3) 4 times, p 3, k 16, k 2 tog., k 1 (63 sts on needle). 12th and all even rows: K 1, p across, ending row with k 1. 13th row: K 1, k 2 tog., k 9, (p 3, k 3) 6 times, p 3, k 9, k 2 tog., k 1. 15th row: K 1, k 2 tog., k 8, (p 3, k 1, O, k 2 tog.) 6 times, p 3, k 8, k 2 tog., k 1 (59 sts). 17th row: K 4, (p 3, k 3) 9 times, k 1. 19th and 21st rows: Same as 17th row. 23rd row: K 2, O, k 2 tog., (p 3, k 1, O, k 2 tog.) 9 times, k 1 (59 sts). 25th to 41st rows (uneven rows) incl: Repeat 17th to 23rd rows (uneven rows) incl. twice, and 17th row once. 26th row: Same as 12th row (59 sts). To shape shoulders, continuing in pattern, bind off 9 sts at beginning of each of next 4 rows. Bind off. Piece should measure 11 inches in all.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 38 sts and work in garter st for 7 rows. 8th row: K 1, p to within last 4 sts, k 4 (this is center front edge). 9th row: K across. These last 2 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these last 2 rows alternately until piece measures 7 inches in all, ending with a p row. Then work as follows:

1st row: K 7, p 3, k 28. 2nd row: K 1, p to within last 4 sts, k 4. 3rd row: K 5, O, k 2 tog., p 3, k 28. 4th row: Repeat 2nd row. 5th row: K 2, O, k 2 tog. (thus a buttonhole is made), (k 3, p 3) twice, k 22. 6th row: Bind off 3 sts (armhole shaping), k 1, p to within last 4 sts, k 4. 7th row: K 4, (k 3, p 3) twice, k 16, k 2 tog., k 1. 8th and all even rows: K 1, p to within last 4 sts, k 4. 9th row: K 4, (k 3, p 3) 3 times, k 9, k 2 tog., k 1. 11th row: K 4, (k 1, O, k 2 tog., p 3) 3 times, k 8, k 2 tog., k 1. 13th and 15th rows: K 4, (k 3, p 3) 4 times, k 4 (32 sts). 17th row: K 2, O, k 2 tog. (another buttonhole); (k 3, p 3) 4 times, k 4. 19th row: K 5, O, k 2 tog., (p 3, k 1, O, k 2 tog.) 4 times, k 1. 21st, 23rd and 25th rows: K 4, (k 3, p 3) 4 times, k 4. 27th and 29th rows: Repeat 19th and 17th rows. 31st row: Bind off 10 sts, k 1, k 2 tog., (p 3, k 3) 3 times, k 1. 32nd row: K 1, p across, ending row with k 1. 33rd row: K 1, p 2 tog., p 2, (k 3, p 3) twice, k 4. 34th row: Same as 32nd row. 35th row: K 1, p 2 tog., p 1, (k 1, O, k 2 tog., p 3) twice, k 1, O, k 2 tog., k 1. 36th row: Same as 32nd row. 37th row: K 1, p 2 tog., (k 3, p 3) twice, k 4. 38th row: Same as 32nd row (18 sts on needle). To shape shoulder, continuing in pattern bind off 9 sts at beginning of each row, at underarm side, twice.

Left Front. Work to correspond with Right Front, but omitting buttonholes and reversing shapings.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 30 sts and work in garter st for 6 ridges (12 rows), increasing 14 sts at equal distances apart on last row (44 sts on needle). Then work in stockinette st for 6 inches, increasing 1 st at both ends of 1 row every 2 inches, twice (48 sts on needle). Then, to shape top of sleeve, bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 24 sts remain. Bind off.

Collar. Starting at one end, cast on 16 sts and work in garter st for 9½ inches. Bind off. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew collar all around neck edge. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
