BERNAT SHAKERSPUN (2 oz. skeins) —3
1 pair BERNAT-Aero straight knitting needles No. 10½ (Canadian Needles No. 2)
OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES THAT WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 yd. round elastic
GAUGE: 3 sts = 1 inch
Cast on 70 sts. P 1, K 1 in ribbing for 2 rows. Row 3: P 1, * K next st in row below, P 1, repeat from * to last st, K 1. Repeat Row 3 for 8 inches. SHAPE TOP: Row 1: Being careful to follow pattern as established, * work 8 sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * across row — 7 sts dec. Row 2 and all even rows: Work even in pattern as established. Row 3: * Work 7 sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * across — 7 sts dec. Continue to dec 7 sts every other row in same manner, having 1 st less between decreases 4 times more. On the next row K 2 tog across. Break off yarn leaving a 12 inch end. Draw yarn through sts tightly.
FINISHING: Sew seam. Make a 3 inch pompon. Sew to top of hat. Turn under 2 inches and sew in place. Weave elastic in and out of last row next to fold. Adjust elastic to head size.
