MATERIALS
BERNAT Nylo Sports — (2 oz. balls) — 1 Main Color (M C)
BERNAT Super Angora (10 gram balls) — 1 Contrasting Color (C C)
1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 1 and 3 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 steel crochet hook No. 3
½ yd 1 inch grosgrain ribbon 1 button

GAUGE: 7 sts = 1 inch in stockinette st

FRONT PIECE: Using No. 1 needles and M C, cast on 98 sts. Work even in garter st for 14 rows (7 ridges), inc 1 st each end of last row — 100 sts. Change to No. 3 needles and P 1 row. Join C C and K 1 row, P 1 row in stockinette st for 4 rows. * Using M C, K the next 2 rows, then P 1 row, K 1 row in reverse stockinette st for 6 rows more. Using C C, K 1 row, P 1 row in stockinette st for 4 rows. Repeat from * twice more — 4 C C stripes. Break off C C. With right side facing you work in M C stockinette st for 4 rows, ending with a P row. SHAPE TOP: Continuing in stockinette st at the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 32 sts. On the next row K 1, sl 1, K 1, psso, K to last 3 sts, K 2 tog, K 1. P 1 row. Repeat last 2 rows until 4 sts remain, ending with a P row. Work even for 4 rows more. On next row inc 1 st in first st, K to last 2 sts, inc 1 st in next st, K 1. P 1 row. Repeat last 2 rows until there are 36 sts on needle. Put a marker in work. BACK: Work even in stockinette st on 36 sts until piece is same length above marker in work as the bound off side edges, ending with a P row. Break off yarn.

NECKBAND: Using No. 1 needles and M C, with right side facing you, pick up and K 26 sts across lower edge of front piece, K sts of back to same needle, dec at even intervals to 24 sts, pick up and K 26 sts across other side of front piece — 76 sts. K even in garter st for 1 inch. Bind off.

STRAP: Using No. 1 needles and M C, with right side facing you, pick up 9 sts across right front edge of neckband. K even in garter st for 4 inches. BUTTONHOLE: K 2, bind off 5 sts, K 1. On next row cast on 5 sts over those bound off previous row. Continue in garter st, dec 1 st each end of needle every other row until 3 sts remain. Bind off.

FINISHING:Sew back piece to bound off edges of front piece. Using M C, with right side facing you, work 1 row of s c around front edge, neckband and strap. Block. Face neckband with ribbon, holding in to desired size. Sew on button. CORD: Using 2 strands of M C, make a ch, 1 inch long. TASSEL: Using remaining M C and C C, make a tassel 6 inches long. Sew cord and tassel to top of hat.
