REQUIREMENTS: Size: Medium

YARN: 4-ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted

NEEDLES: 1-pr. #8 single pointed

NOTE: Use yarn 2 strands together through entire mitten.

RIGHT MITTEN: Using the yarn double and #8 needles, cast on 24 sts. 1st row: K 4 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 13 sts. 2nd row: P 14 sts, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 5. Repeat these 2 rows for 3 inches.

THUMB INCREASES: (Keep the 7 sts of panel in pattern) Work over 13 sts cast on 1 st, k 1, cast on 1 st, k 10. Work back as the sts are. 2nd inc: .Work over 13 sts cast on 1 st, k 3, cast on 1 st, k 10. Work back as sts are. 3rd inc: Work over 13 sts, cast on 1 st, k 5, cast on 1 st, k 10. Work back as sts are. 4th inc: Work over 13 sts, cast on 1 st, k 7, cast on 1 st, k 10. Work back as sts are. 9th row: K 4, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, knit to end of row. 10th row: Work back as the sts are.

THUMB SEPARATION: K 4, work over the next 7 sts, k 2, place these 13 sts onto a st holder; k 9 sts and leave on the needle; place the remaining sts onto a 2nd st holder. Cast on 1 st at end of thumb sts, turn, and purl back across the 10 sts; cast on 1 st (11 sts). Work back and forth on these sts in stockinette stitch for 10 rows, ending with a purl row. Knit 2 sts together across the next row. Break yarn leaving 8 inches. Draw thru the remaining sts and fasten off tightly on the wrong side. Sew up thumb.

HAND: Place the sts off first st holder onto the needle and tie yarn in at first st; pick up and knit 4 sts on thumb gusset; knit the sts off 2nd st holder. Work as the sts are in the pattern until the mitten measures 3¾ inches above the thumb gusset. TIP DECREASES: 1st. dec: K 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 7, k 2 tog, k 2, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 8, k 2 tog, k 1. Work back as the sts are. 2nd dec: K 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 5, k 2 tog, k 2, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 6, k 2 tog, k 1. Work back as the sts are. 3rd dec: K 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 3, k 2, tog, k 2, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 4, k 2 tog, k 1. Work back as the sts are. Knit 2 sts together across next row. Break yarn leaving 14 inches. Thread a darning needle and draw through remaining sts. Fasten tightly on wrong side of work. Sew up side of mitten.

LEFT MITTEN: 1st row: K 13 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 4. 2nd row: P 5 sts, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 14 sts. When it is time to start the thumb increases—work over 10 sts, cast on 1 st, k 1, cast on 1 st, work to end of row. Work remainder of this mitten to correspond to the right one.

FINISHING: Thread a darning needle with the contrast¬ing color and run under the purl sts on each side of the panel and in the center line, as in illustration. Using a large hook, make 1 row of s c around edge of cuff.
