THUMB INCREASES: Always done on a knit row. Purl 1 row between each of the following increases.

THUMB SEPARATION: Knit and place onto a stitch holder

Knit and leave on the knitting needle

Place the remaining sts onto a 2nd st holder. Cast on 1 st at the end of these thumb sts; turn and purl across, cast on 1 st.
Work on these sts in stockinette stitch for

Next knit row — ALL SIZES:
Knit 2 sts together across the row. Break yarn leaving 7 ins.
Thread a darning needle and draw thru the sts and fasten tightly on the wrong side.
Sew up thumb.
HAND: Place the sts from the first st holder, back onto the needle

Tie yarn in the first st, pick up and knit along thumb

Knit sts from the 2nd st holder. Work on these sts until the work measures the following inches above the ribbing

1st dec: (for 8-yr. old only) * k 5 sts; k 2 tog, repeat from * across row. P 1 row. 2nd dec: (ALL SIZES) * k 4, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row. Purl 1 row. 3rd dec: (ALL SIZES) * k 2, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row. Purl 1 row. Knit 2 sts together across next row. Sew up the side of the mitten. Break yarn leaving 10 inches. Finish off as the top of thumb.

LEFT MITTEN: Cast on the sts and do the cuff the same way. Reverse the instructions for the increases and then work the rest of the mitten the same way.
