Cardigan Pattern

SIZE 6 MONTHS TO 1 YEAR

4 1-oz. Balls 3-ply Fingering Yarn
1 Pr. Size 1 Standard Knitting Needles
1 Pr. Size 3 Standard Knitting Needles

Gauge: 7 sts to 1 in.

Back: With size 3 needles cast on 75 sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 14 rows, then work in pattern as follows Rows 1 and 3—(right side): P 3, * K 1, P 3; repeat from * across row.
Rows 2 and 4—K 3, * P 1, K 3; repeat from *.
Rows 5 and 7—P 1, * K 1, P 3; repeat from * ending K 1, P 1.
Rows 6 and 8—K 1, * P 1, K 3; repeat from * ending P 1, K 1.
Repeat above 8 rows until piece measures 7 in. or desired length from lower edge. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows for underarm. Work even until piece measures 3½ in. from un­derarm. Bind off 11 sts at beginning of each of next 4 rows for shoulders. Bind off remaining sts.
Right Front: With size 3 needles cast on 41 sts.
Row 1 (right side)—K 6; P 1, K 1, across row.
Row 2—K 1, P 1, across 35 sts, K 6.
Repeat above 2 rows, working a buttonhole on the 7th row as follows: K 2, K 2 tog., Y O, K 2; P 1, K 1, across row. Work back knitting the Y O as a st. Repeat buttonholes every 14th row to neck edge.
When 14 rows of ribbing have been completed, keeping the first 6 sts worked in garter st and re­maining sts in pattern, work even until piece meas­ures 7 in. from lower edge. Bind off 5 sts at under­arm edge once. Work even until piece measures 2½ in. from underarm.
Bind off 10 sts at neck edge once; decrease 1 st at neck edge, every other row, 4 times. Starting at shoulder edge, bind off 11 sts every other row 2 times.
Left Front: Work as given for right front, binding off for underarm on right side and omitting but­tonholes. Sew shoulder seams.
Sleeves: With size 3 needles on right side of gar­ment, pick up 55 sts from end to end of armhole. Work even in pattern until piece measures 6½ in., ending on wrong side. Change to size 1 needles and K 1 row decreasing to 45 sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 12 rows. Bind off. Sew underarm and sleeve seams.
Collar: With size 1 needles on wrong side of car­digan, pick up 71 sts across neck edge, starting and ending in the center of the garter st bands at front edges. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 6 rows. Change to size 3 needles and continue ribbing for 14 more rows. Bind off loosely.
