Sizes 4 and 6 years in parentheses

MATERIAL:
2 (2-3) balls Sport Yarn, Orlon Sayelle or Wintuk Sport Yarn (2 oz. skein)
1 pair knitting needles each No. 3 and No. 5
1 set sock needles No. 3
1 stitch holder

GAUGE: 6 sts. = 1 inch

PATTERN:
1st row right side: * P3 † K2 tog., but do not slip them from left hand needle, K the first of these 2 sts. once again and slip both sts. from left needle repeat from † twice, then repeat from * across row end P3
2nd row wrong side: K3 * P6, K3 repeat from * across row end K3
3rd row right side: * P3, K1 † K2 tog., but don't slip them from left needle, K the first st. once again, then slip both sts. from left needle repeat from † once, K1 then repeat from * across row end P3
4th row wrong side: Work as 2nd row
Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.

BACK:
Cast on 64 (72-80) sts. with No. 3 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2 inch. (all sizes). Incr. 2 (3-4) sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 5 needles and pattern. With 66 (75-84) sts. work even until the entire piece measures 7½ (8½-9½) inch. or any des. length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 4 (6-8) sts., at the beg. of the next 4 rows 2 sts. (all sizes) (50 (55-60) sts. left). Work even for 5 (5½-6) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 4 (4-6) rows 7 (8-6) sts., rem. 22 (23-24) sts. bind off for neck.

FRONT:
Work Front as Back until 50 (55-60) sts. are left. Shape V neck: Work across 25 (27-30) sts. and slip them to a holder to be worked later. (For size 4 only: Bind off 1 st.) Work across rem. 25 (27-30) sts. only and decr. for neck 1 st. at center edge every 2nd and 3rd row alternately until 14 (16-18) sts. are left over. Work as high as back and bind off for shoulder at armhole edge 7 (8-6) sts. 2 (2-3) times. Slip sts. from holder back to needle, attach yarn and finish this side of neck to correspond.

FINISHING:
Sew up side and shoulder seams. Neckband: Right side facing you pick up with No. 3 sock needles 77 (85-93) sts. around the neck. Put a marker in center st. at V neck and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 6 rows, decr. 1 st. before and after the center st. every other row. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Armband: Right side fac­ing you pick up with No. 3 sock needles 68 (72-80) sts. around the armhole and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 6 rows. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Block to size.
