Toddler Sizes 2 and 3

MATERIALS: CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY WOOL (¾ oz. balls), 4 balls of main color, and 1 ball of contrasting color for each size. Clark's O.N.T. Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 and 1 pair No. 3.
GAUGE: 7½ sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

FRONT … With No. 1 needles and main color, cast on	72 sts	78 sts
Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1½ inches. Change to No. 3 needles and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 6 rows.
Divide contrasting color into 2 balls and work as follows: 1st row: With main color, knit	7 sts	10 sts
attach ball of contrasting color, drop main color, k 3 sts with contrasting color, pick up main color (twist the 2 colors around each other to prevent making a hole), drop C, with M k 6 sts, pick up C, twist as before, drop M, k 3 sts with C, pick up M, twist, drop C, k 34 sts with M, attach 2nd ball of C, k 3 sts with C, pick up M, twist, drop C, k 6 sts with M, pick up C, twist, drop M, k 3 sts with C, pick up M, twist, drop C, with M k last	7 sts	10 sts
2nd row: P across as follows: Work	7 M	10 M
then, using 2nd ball of C, work 3 C, 6 M, 3 C, 4 M, 1 C, 24 M. Using 1st ball of C, work 1 C, 4 M, 3 C, 6 M, 3 C	7 M	10 M
(always twist yarns around each other when changing colors).
Continue in stockinette st, following chart for color changes (starting with 3rd row and working to top of chart). Yarn is carried across back of work when knitting elephants. Spread sts on needle so that yarn on wrong side will not draw work up too tightly, and twist yarns around each other about every 6 sts to prevent loose strands from getting too long. Work in main color until piece measures in all	8"	8½"
To Shape Armholes: Bind off at the beginning of the next 2 rows	6 sts	7 sts
Work straight on the remaining sts until piece measures from armhole shaping	2"	2½"
Next row: Work across	20 sts	22 sts
bind off the next 20 sts for front of neck and finish row.
Turn and work over the last set of sts only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every row until there remain	15 sts	17 sts
Work 2 more rows.
Change to No. 1 needles and work in garter st (k each row) until piece measures 1½ inches from front of neck, ending at neck edge. Break yarn. Attach yarn to sts of other shoulder and work to correspond, but do not break yarn. Cast on 30 sts for back of neck, then k across sts of 1st shoulder. Change to No. 3 needles and work in stockinette st until piece measures from back of neck	3½"	4"
For underarm cast on at end of next 2 rows	6 sts	10 sts
Work in stockinette st until piece measures from back of neck	10"	11"
Change to No. 1 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1½ inches. Bind off loosely in ribbing.
SLEEVES … With right side facing, using No. 3 needles and main color, pick up around armhole	52 sts	56 sts
Work in stockinette st for 2 inches. Dec 1 st at both ends of next row and every 1½ inches thereafter until there remain	44 sts	48 sts
Work straight until Sleeve measures in all	8"	8½"
Change to No. 1 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 2½ inches. Bind off loosely in ribbing.
FRONT NECKBAND … With No. 1 needles and main color, pick up 52 sts around side and front of neck. Change to contrasting color and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 6 rows. Bind off loosely in ribbing.
BACK NECKBAND … Work same as Front Neckband but pick up only 40 sts.
Press lightly with hot iron through damp cloth. Sew side and sleeve seams with one continuous seam. Sew seams in neckband.
