Approximately 38" x 38", including fringe

MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY BUNT­ING, 10 balls (¾ oz. balls).
Clark's O.N.T. Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3.

GAUGE: 1 pattern makes 1¾ inches; 8 rows make 1 inch. Pattern is a multiple of 12 sts plus 5.

   Cast on 245 sts. K 3 rows, then work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K 2, * p 1, k 5, yarn over 4 times, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 4. Repeat from * across, ending with p 1, k 2. 2nd row: K 3, * p 3, p 2 tog through backs of sts, yarn over 4 times, drop the yarn over's of previous row off needle, p 2 tog, p 3, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 3 instead of k 1. 3rd row: K 2, * p 1, k 2, k 2 tog, yarn over 4 times, drop yarn over's of previous row, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 2. Repeat from * across, ending with p 1, k 2. 4th row: K 3, * p 1, p 2 tog through the backs of sts, yarn over 4 times, drop yarn over's of previous row, p 2 tog, p 1, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 3 instead of k 1. 5th row: K 2, * p 1, k 2 tog, yarn over 4 times, drop yarn over's of previous row, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o. Repeat from * across, ending with p 1, k 2. 6th row: K 3, * p 1, drop yarn over's of previous row, turn work (thus reversing position of needles), cast on 4 sts—to cast on, ** insert what is now right-hand needle in 1st st on left-hand needle and k 1 st but do not drop st off left needle. Place st just made on to left needle (1 st cast on). Repeat from ** 3 more times. Insert right-hand needle under the 5 loose strands, yarn over and draw loop through, place this loop on left-hand needle. Cast on 4 sts, turn work, p 1, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 3 instead of k 1. Repeat these 6 rows for pattern until piece is square. K 3 rows. Bind off.

FRINGE … Cut 4 strands, each 10 inches long. Double these strands, form­ing a loop. With a crochet hook pull loop through at edge of shawl and draw the 8 loose strands through this loop. Pull tight to form a knot. Make fringe about ¾ inch apart around all 4 sides of shawl. Knot together 4 strands of 2 adjacent knots ¾ inch from edge of shawl. Trim fringe evenly.
