Ankle Socks Pattern

MATERIALS
BERNAT Meadowspun (1 oz. pull skeins) — 2
1 set each d p needles Nos. 1 and 2 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW

GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 inch; 12 rounds = 1 inch

DIRECTIONS: Using No. 2 needles, cast on 56 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Change to No. 1 needles and K 2, P 2 in ribbing for 3 inches. Change to No. 2 needles and continue in ribbing until piece measures 5 inches. HEEL AND FOOT: With right side facing you, K 14 sts onto one No. 2 d p needle; K center 28 sts onto another d p needle for instep; K last 14 sts onto a d p needle and then K 14 sts from other d p needle onto this same d p needle. This joins heel sts and center back is at center of needle. HEEL: Work as follows on 28 sts of heel: Row 1: Purl. Row 2: * K 1, sl 1, repeat from * ending K 2. Repeat these 2 rows for 2 inches, ending with Row 2. TURN HEEL: P 16, P 2 tog, P 1, turn; sl 1, K 5, sl 1, K 1, psso, K 1, turn; sl 1, P 6, P 2 tog, P 1, turn; sl 1, K 7, sl 1, K 1, psso, K 1, turn; sl 1, P 8, P 2 tog, P 1, turn. Continue in this manner, working 1 st more each time, until all sts have been worked, ending with a K row — 16 sts on needle. Pick up and K 16 sts along side of heel piece; on second needle K across 28 sts of instep; on third needle pick up and K 16 sts along other side of heel piece and K 8 sts from heel onto this same needle. There are now 24 sts on each heel needle. Starting at center of heel, SHAPE HEEL GUSSET: Round 1: On the first needle K to last 3 sts, K 2 tog, K 1; K across instep sts on second needle; on third needle K 1, sl 1, K 1, psso, K to end of round. Round 2: Knit. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 14 sts on both the first and third needles. FOOT: K round and round until foot measures 2 inches less than desired finished length, measuring from center back of heel. SHAPE TOE: Round 1: On the first needle K to last 3 sts, K 2 tog, K 1; on second needle K 1, sl 1, K 1, psso, K to last 3 sts, K 2 tog, K 1; on the third needle K 1, sl 1, K 1, psso, K to end of round. Round 2: Knit. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 3 sts on each heel needle, ending with first needle. Put all heel sts onto one needle. Break off yarn, leaving a 12 inch end. Weave heel and instep sts tog. Block.
