LEFT MITTEN: Cuff: Cast on 44 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 25 rows. Decrease rows: * k 2 sts together, purl 2 sts; repeat from * across row, ending with p 2. Next row: * k 2, p 1, repeat from * across row. Next row: * k 1, p 2, repeat from * across row. Repeat these last 2 rows until 5 rows of ribbing have been completed. Knit across next row, increasing 1 st (35 sts). Purl next row. Knit 1 row, purl 1 row for 9 rows more.

THUMB: Knit 11 sts, place onto a st holder; knit 6 sts and leave on the needle; place the remaining sts onto a st holder. Working on the 6 sts that are on the needle, cast on 3 sts at end of row. Purl across these 9 sts, cast on 3 sts (12 sts). Work in stockinette stitch for 14 rows. Next row: Knit 2 sts together across row. Break yarn, leaving 9 inches. Thread a darning needle and draw through all sts. Fasten tightly on wrong side of work. Sew up thumb.

HAND: Place the sts off first st holder onto a needle; tie yarn in, with the same needle pick up and knit 6 sts on the thumb gusset; knit the sts off 2nd st holder. Purl across all sts (35 sts). Now work in stockinette stitch for 16 rows, ending with a purl row. 1st dec: K 2 tog, k 15, k 2 tog, k 15. Purl next row. 2nd dec: * k 2 tog, k 2, repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 3rd dec: * k 2 tog, k 1, repeat from * across row. Purl next row. Last dec: K 2 sts together across row. Break yarn leaving 12 inches. Finish top of mitten as tip of thumb. Sew up mitten along side.

RIGHT MITTEN: Do as the left mitten until you come to the thumb—Knit 17 sts, place onto a st holder, k 6 sts and leave on the needle; place the remaining sts onto a 2nd st holder. Finish remainder of thumb and mitten to correspond to the left one.
