Square (Cubic) Needles
Square needles — sometimes called "cubics" — have flat sides instead of a round shaft. The flat sides are ergonomic for sore hands and produce a slightly more even gauge because each stitch sits the same way on the needle.
Best for
- Knitters with arthritis or repetitive-strain pain
- Knitters who fight to get even gauge in stockinette
- Anyone curious about an unusual tool
Downsides
- Heavier than round needles of the same size
- Limited brand choice (Kollage, Knitter's Pride Cubics)
- Higher price

In depth
Cubic needles are a niche; most knitters do fine with round needles. They are worth trying for ergonomic relief or as a fix for stubborn rowing-out (uneven gauge between RS and WS rows in stockinette).
