Double-Pointed Needles (DPNs)
Double-pointed needles are short, pointed at both ends, and sold in sets of four or five. They are the traditional way to knit in the round on small circumferences — sock toes, mitten thumbs, hat crowns. A magic-loop circular can do the same job with one needle, but DPNs remain unmatched for speed on socks and gloves.

In depth
DPNs come in 4-inch, 5-inch, 6-inch, 7-inch, and 8-inch lengths. 6-inch is the most versatile for socks and adult hats; 4-inch is for finger and thumb work. Bamboo DPNs grip better than metal, which matters because the unused needle dangling off the work has to stay put. A set of 5 needles (working with 4 sides plus 1 working needle) holds the work more flexibly than a set of 4.
