Circular Knitting Needles

A circular needle is two short tips connected by a flexible cable. Circulars work for everything: knitting in the round (in the cable's full length, or on two circulars, or with magic loop), and knitting flat (using the cable as a long, single needle that holds the weight of the project off your wrists).

Best for

  • All in-the-round knitting except DPN-only items
  • Flat knitting where weight is an issue
  • Travel — both tips and the project rest in one piece
  • Magic-loop sock knitting

Common cable lengths

  • 16 in (40 cm) — adult hats, cowls, sleeves
  • 24 in (60 cm) — sweater bodies, large cowls, blankets in the round
  • 32 in (80 cm) — adult yokes, blanket panels, magic-loop sleeves
  • 40 in (100 cm) — wide blankets, lace stoles knit flat, magic-loop socks
  • 47 in (120 cm) — most blankets, magic-loop two-at-a-time

In depth

Cable quality matters more than needle quality. Stiff cables curl, kink, and snag the project; supple, memory-free cables (ChiaoGoo, Addi Lace, Knitter's Pride Karbonz) glide and stay flat. Interchangeable circular sets (Knit Pro Symfonie Wood, Addi Click, ChiaoGoo Twist) let you swap tips and cables — the most economical entry to a complete needle wardrobe.
